I know I can PRINT in landscape format. But I want to compose within that shape.

If you mean “to write a document with a page in landscape orientation”, you must define the page orientation as such.
For a simple document (only landscape pages), Format>Page, Page tab and select the desired orientation.

Open the style side pane F11, click on the fourth icon in the pane toolbar (a small button with a page shape) and double-click on Landscape.
The second method gives an introduction to page style usage, which is mandatory if you mix portrait and landscape pages in a document. In this case, you must alternate between Default Style (portrait) and Landscape (obviously landscape) styles by forcing a manual page break with Insert>Manual Break. The pop-up dialog allows to choose a page Style with which the subsequent pages will be laid out.
When you become familiar with styles, this alternation can be automated with adequate paragraph styles.
