write file will not open

I created a document in LO, saved it but I cannot retrieve it. It is present in the list of documents in LO but double clicking on it results in the message that the file does not exist…

I am using Windows 10 home single language— the document was created in LO. It appears in the list of recent docs in LO but is not present in the windows documents list. Clicking on the LO document icon in recent documents generates the error message the the file was not found…

Which OS and version do you use?

Try to open LO and in LO choose File Open. Does it work that way?

One common cause for this is when one had opened a document from some application (like email or such), e.g. double-clicking an attachment in the application. This causes that application to copy the attachment from some inner storage to a temporary (!) location, and launch associated application (LibreOffice) to handle it. Then it waits until the application exits, and then it cleans up removing the file from the temporary location.

In that event, all modifications that LibreOffice could save when user pressed “Save” button would be lost; LibreOffice would keep in its history that it had opened something from that path (which user would see), but naturally, trying to open that would fail.

LibreOffice has no means to know that a location it works with is something temporary. Actually, LibreOffice knows about standard system temp directory; and if a document was opened from that place, it would open it in read-only mode, forcing user to save to a different place if required. But some applications pretend to be clever (Windows 10 Mail among them), and use other places for temporary storage. Nothing to be done when there’s something that brutal.
