More help with Base? Finding Drew Jensen...

You helped me with Base but I have more questions. How did you get your screen shots of Base on the Forum page? How can I get more help with my project from you? I don’t understand some of the information you gave me.

WRITER Question: Ultimately I want my database, which holds all my records to communicate with Writer. I want my form letters to pull out certain records (I specify) to print the letter for a specific person, addressed to the specific client and referencing a specific plaintiff’s attorney. Is this possible between Writer and Base?

There are many free screenshot apps. I use Greenshot for Windows. A good one will be able to capture a rectangular region instead of the whole screen (most screen capture apps do this). You can assign the capture to a combination of keys like SHIFT+ some key or CTRL+ some key, or more commonly the Print Screen key. Save the image to your computer and attach it to your question via the add picture icon and locating where you downloaded the screenshot.

Thank you. I have Snip it but it does not show up when I try to Paste the info. Then I saved as a PDF and it still would not show up.

To add an image to a question the screenshot needs to be a web compatible image such as JPG, PNG or GIF. A PDF can be attached, but not embedded. Was going to mention Windows Snipping Tool, but I ran out of precious characters in my comment  Don’t want to steal Drew’s thunder… but the short answer to your question is a mail merge into Writer for form letters. It’s a multi-step process where you first register the data source, then insert fields where name, address & other info should appear.

thanks again, got it to work.

Just to clarify… you got the screenshot to work, or you figured out the mail merge & form letter? If you figured out the form letter, feel free to answer your own question and earn a badge! Wooo! Otherwise surely Drew (or another expert) will eventually see his name and give a thorough exposition  People are likely busy with the big American holiday, Thanksgiving, from now through the weekend. Me too. Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it, or to anyone who has stuff to be thankful for!

Got the screen shot to work. Baby steps! Still baffled about the Query section. I have all the zipcodes in a table (42,000+) and I know I want the zipcodes to show and be stored in my database for each client, attorney and customer; however I do not know how to get there yet. My primary key is zipcode; attorney zip, client zip and customer zip. I have also established a relationship between these 4 tables.

As I said before I have not done this in over 20+ years.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes I got the screen shots to work. And I understand what you ment there, that was fair to say.

IDK what to tell you, Does Base do it the way Access does it; NO

But then the general question ended up being, Can LibreOffice produce form letters?
Yes! (kind of silly question)

Can Base handle relational data models?
Yes (Another silly question)

Did that final screen show a relationship and query that put data from three tables into a single result set for display? Yes

I’ll add a form letter.

One other comment before I proceed with this.
I stopped for a day to look at doing this for you (and I’ll give you files when I’m done) with Writer mail merge or a little script from inside Base. I will create the form letter in Writer but use it from a script in Base. What I am going to do is use the Acess2Base library (which installs by default with LO). I’m new to using this lib, so needed to read over the specs.

How do you talk to someone privately to share detailed questions that do not go out to everyone? The details are sensitive and the Boss does not want them out there for all to see.

I don’t believe the Ask system has a private message feature.

IDK what to tell you, Does Base do it the way Access does it; NO
Access came up because there was an example that showed my initial question about the zipcode link to the 3 city and states
Can LibreOffice produce form letters? Yes! (kind of silly question)
I knew it could produce a form letter. Was not sure if it could pull out specific records.
Can Base handle relational data models? Yes (Another silly question)
I’m not sure I asked that, but again 20+ years without databases

Thank you for all your help. I appreciate all the time you put in on my question. Have a Happy Thanksgiving. I will continue my education in LibreOffice with the query section.

@jawspro, Always please say what OS you’re using, because answers your Q depend on this. Also one question at a time please.
