What are the 5 squares and minus signs above my column headers for and how do I get rid of them.

You have grouped cells in column H.
To remove the groups, hit Ctrl+F12 four times until the group markers disappear.
Thanks for your answer. Ctrl+F12 didn’t work for me (I have PC keyboard and a Mac mini) so I found Data>Group and Outline and ungrouped four times.
I still have two small squares left to delete but can’t figure out how.
I just figured out how to remove the tiny numbered squares - Data>Groups and Outline>Remove Outline
You are right, of course.
I should have mentioned the menu alternative in my answer - sorry.
