Headers "living in the past" - has Prior Page Info!

Hi,

I’m writing a thesis with chapters in a master doc. It’s going well but am noticing that the heading (set to heading level 3 as I need lots of sub-levels) are for page prior content…

Thus, a page starting out on Chapter 4 gets a heading for Chapter 3 etc. This happens inside the chapters as well as between (so a page starting section 4.3 still has 4.2.2 at the top etc.)

So I suppose the problem is that when the system (5.4 on Windoz) creates the header, all it knows is the last level 3 data it had, not what the current page is about. A pity when that page - starts something new Looks silly.

Don’t want to fix this using a manual workaround, too many pages! This must be a common problem; how can it be fixed?

Heading for Chapter 3 on page starting Chapter 4

If I understand right, you header title is created with a reference to a level-3 heading.

The heading is selecting according to the first paragraph of the page. If it is a Heading n paragraph, its level will be used to determine the header title. For levels 1-3, the corresponding heading is used (meaning level 1 has precedence over level 2 which has precedence over level 3).

When there is no such level (either n > 3, or the paragraph is “ordinary” text), Writer uses the most recent level-1-3 paragraph on the ground that the page starting paragraph belongs in this part.

The attached screenshot was taken without enabling View>Formatting Marks. Consequently, I can’t tell if there is an empty paragraph before your “Chapter 4” paragraph. The best way to guarantee expected behaviour is to encode the page break in the Text Flow tab of the Heading 1 style definition.

Also, never achieve vertical spacing with empty paragraphs (sorry if you already abide by this rule, but your screenshot can’t help to know). Spacing above and below is set in Indents & Spacing tab of paragraph style definition. The presence of empty paragraphs could explain your symptoms.

Hi ajlittoz,

Working with a set of corrections - looks like the hidden paras were in the Master. I had blank sections in the Master between the chapter subdocs. Edited those out; is looking better but will play with this a bit longer before declaring fixed!
