After I install not from the distribution, all my different settings get overwritten, then I have to re-enter them again.

When updating, the options are not overwritten, in any case look in https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile

Thank-you for the information, following the instructions on that site I was able to install a newer version, that is the latest as of this date, without losing all my settings.
