Create a new style for a text that is wrongly included under another style

I have a serious problem with styles. I do not know how to create therm, delete them, or split them And I need it all.

I AM TALKING ABOUT SETTING UP HEADERS AND FOOTER AND MARGINS FOR PRINTING. I WANT FIRST PAGE OF EACH CHAPTER TO HAVE IT OWN HEADING BUT NOT ITS OWN FOOTER. AND I WANT NO HEADER OR FOOTER FOR CERTAIN CHAPTERS - I DON’T WANT THEM TO TAKE UP SPACE.

THE VIDEO REFERENCE DID NOT HELP ANYTHING. FIRST, i HAVE NO LINK TO THE TRAINING DOCUMENTS i AM SUPPOSED TO OPEN. NEXT, THE VIDEO DOES NOT AT ALL ADDRESS MY CONCERNS WITH THE OVERALL COMPOSITION OF THE DOCUMENT. I GUESS YOU CALL THAT ‘PAGE STYLES’, BUT I DO NOT KNOW IF THAT IS THE RIGHT TERM.

WHEN I HIGHLIGHT THE TEXT AND AND TO CHANGE ITS STYLE, THE STYLE NOT NOT CHANGE AS SAID IN THE VIDEO. I CANNOT GET IT FREE OF THE STYLE IT ONCE WAS ASSIGNED TO. I WANT TO DELETE ALL DAMNED STYLES AND START FROM SCRATCH, SETTING THE STYLES THAT SET THE HEADING, THE FOOTER, AND THE MARGINS RIGHT. AND i HAVE NO CLUE HOW TO DO THIS.

I have got the styling of my document screwed up. I do not know what happened, or why, but it is a fact I have to get a solution to. The styles are simply wrong, and they connect the pages in a wrong way. I tried to copy the text, but the damned style comes with it! I need to delete those wrong styles, so I can start over. But I have no clue how to do this.

After that, I need to create new styles, and I would love to reuse the same style for all 40 chapters in my book, instead of tediously creating 40 new identical styles styles that ONLY fit the pages I assign then to, and not any other pages. But I have no clue how to create a style for a chapter in my book.

Can anyone help with specific HOW TO?

ICH SPRECHE DEUTSCH UND DEUTSCHE REFERENZEN SIND WILKOMMEN,

Please edit your question to clarify some points. Styles are fundamental components of LO Writer document management. There are styles for general page organisation (margins, columns, header, footer et al.), for paragraph attributes (spacing all around, font, outline inclusion, borders, etc.) and for inline attributes within a paragraph, called character style (mainly font and position for subscript/superscript). There are other styles (frame, list – or rather numbering) but they are less visible to beginners.

In your question, I don’t understand if you have difficulties with page styles (suggested by “the same style style for all 40 chapters”) or with paragraph styles and the links between them.

Ich will si splitten.

Und beschreibe nochmal genau, was Du erreichen möchtest.

Siehe meine editierte Antwort: EDIT_20190118-09.40 unten.

From your update, I see your question is related to page styles. Since you seem to have downloaded the user guide in your own language, read first about page styles which, as you assumed, give structure to your document.

Margins are set in the Page tab of the style dialog. Header and footer have their own tabs. Pay attention to the checkboxes Same content on first page and Same content on left and right pages. If you uncheck one or both, you create subordinate styles which allow for different header/footer on the designated pages.

Be aware that there can be only one header title per page style (up to 3 if you uncheck the boxes). This means that the title will be the same if you use the same page style for various chapters. This is important for a static title (a title composed only of manually entered text) which will be identically repeated in every chapter. You can circumvent this using field insertion (another advanced feature) to retrieve the content of a heading paragraph (usually the most recent typed as Heading 1).

The technique mentioned above with unchecking boxes is a poor man’s approach and won’t fit your requirement because the margin settings remain the same over the subordinate styles and the header/footer is enabled simultaneously in all of them, with the result that the header or footer area is present whether it contains text or not.

If you want use the header/footer space for your text after the first page, you need to define one page style for the first page and a second one for pages 2+ so that you can disable selectively header/footer. Then you link the page style for pages 2+ into first page style definition (tab Organizer, drop-down menu Next style). This is the hard point.

Page style changes can be triggered automatically by paragraph styles. This is set in Text Flow tab, Breaks section.

Read the documentation first. Experiment on a small test document (so that you don’t damage your real one). Come back here when you have questions.

EDIT 2019-1-12

Pages do not exist per se in Writer. They are a consequence of text flow. As soon as text needs space, a page is allocated. This is why you cannot say “I start a page with such layout and I put text into it”. It works the other way round.

Type your text with the required paragraph styling. You can give the allocated pages a specific layout by double-clicking on a page style name in the style side-pane (F11, fourth icon in toolbar). That is you choose among already defined styles.

Having so given a page style to your text is valid for the current flow, until the next explicit page break (i.e. a voluntarily inserted page break, this is not the same as the automatic flow to next page). Only a page break allows you to change page style for the next group of pages.

  • Page breaks are either inserted manually with Insert>Manual Break (don’t use Insert>Page Break because it breaks for the same page style) and choosing a specific style from the drop down menu. You can also force the page number to restart at a given number (useful for TOC or indexes).

  • Or page breaks can be made part of paragraph styles through the Text Flow tab acting on the same settings. This is nice if the page group always start with the same styled paragraph, so that you don’t need to manually insert the break.

These manual page breaks will structure your document in page groups having the same presentation. The range of validity of a page style is from a page break (or document start) to the next page break (or document end).

As you notice, the page style must exist prior the insertion. From your comment, I assume you know hos to customise or create a page style.

There is no way to erase the page style attribute of a part of the text: the text is always composed in a page and this page must have a style, be it Default Style. You know which style is applied at the cursor position as the style in effect is highlighted in the page style list.

Changing the current page style depends on how it was set. For a manual break, just put the cursor in the page and double-click on the new page style. For a paragraph style triggered break, modify the paragraph style (you can also double-click but it creates a direct formatting which conflicts with the style and overrides it, making later edits behave unexpectedly).

To modify a page style, right-click on its name and select Modify.

You can delete unused styles with a right-click on the name and Delete. LO Writer will warn you if the style is in use. It will not let you delete built-in styles.

To answer your question about 1 vs. 40 chapter page styles, I need to know how they differ from each other, what is in the header/footer.

I still have no clue, after spending the whole day reading instructions, what the hell I need to do to CREATE a page style and APPLY it to a chosen text, and how I can DELETE one I do not need.

I need no more motivation for understanding WHY this is smart - I need to know HOW I DO IT!

I know well how to set all the parameters of a style. Making headers and footers and setting margins - I can do that. I just need to erase all the current styles and REPLACE them with some new ones that are following the chapters, not sharing a chapter or overlapping two chapters, And I am trying to not have to do that 40 times, but doing it ONCE and reusing the style I have created.

The problem is HOW to assign it to a chosen text. How do you tell the program where a style must start and where it must end?

Besides, there is a lot of guesswork associated with understanding how German names for functions correspond to the English ones in my program…

This is not fun any more. Reading hundreds of pages that do not address my problem just confuses me even more. Things do not work as described, so I am probably missing out on information that is regarded “self evident”.

So far, I found these answers to my original questions - that have not changed; I just try to formulate them differently so they can be understood.

“Page styles” go from one manual break to another. I can insert those breaks, but I have no clue how to delete them. So, I soon have one per page in my 260 page document, if I continue “repairing this way” by inserting breaks - I need over 100 styles - its get impossible to keep track of!

I can only use a page style ONCE, so I have to create 40 new ones, one per break.

I just want to know THIS - as from date one: *HOW can I modify/create/change a page style to encompass exactly the text I want it to encompass? How can I make a new page style that covers the text currently covered by several page styles?

“It works the other way round.” And HOW exactly do I MAKE IT HAPPEN?

“That is you choose among already defined styles.” That’s NOT what I want. None of the existing styles fit my purpose.

“Only a page break allows you to change page style for the next group of pages.” How is that group defined? How can I modify it?

“To answer your question about 1 vs. 40 chapter page styles, I need to know how they differ from each other, what is in the header/footer.” All 40 chapters are the same. First page header unique. Footer left and right different. Margins left and right different, for printing (mirrored pages).

I know how to modify a style, except that I do not know how to make two styles into one or how to change the limits for an already existing style! This is again boiling down to finding out HOW to set the limits for a chosen style. It is clearly not with the mouse! And I need more than knowing it goes from break to break. HOW do I modify the breaks?

When I insert a manual break or a page break or both, it does not allow me to separate from the previous page style for the previous chapter. It too gets influenced by the changes I made, for instance in header - those changes penetrate back to the precious text, whose page style ALSO get assigned to the new style!

So breaks do not define the boundaries for a page style! What does then???

I need to know how to LIMIT those styles to the text I want them to be associated with! How is that done? HOW???

“Page style changes can be triggered automatically by paragraph styles. This is set in Text Flow tab, Breaks section.” Is this another type of breaks than “Manual breaks” that don’t work? HOW do I use it??? “With page style” - what does that mean? What is the page counter for?

Try to play with a short 3-page document to get accustomed to breaks. You delimit a group of pages with a manual break; there is no other way of doing it. But, the key element is to “activate” a page style from the Style drop-down menu. If you leave the selection as [None], your break is strictly equivalent to Insert>Page break, keeping you in the same group.

Also, if you reuse a page style, header and footer will be the same as previously because a page style has a single value for header and footer. Consequently, changing header content will change it also in the previous group.

If you want to use a single page style for all your 40 chapters with a different header in each one, you must define a dynamic header with field insertion. This is a little more complex, but not that much. It is fairly easy if the header is the same as some heading, such as the chapter title.

First succeed in your page groups with manual page breaks. Then we’ll help you with header issue.

Look, if this video helps you on YouTube.

THANKS FOR TRYING, BUT IT DOES NOT ADDRESS MY PROBLEM AT ALL. WE TALK ABOUT THE STRUCTURE OF THE TEXT, WITH HEADERS AND FOOTER AND MARGINS. NOT FONT EFFECTS. BESIDES, I DO NOT HAVE THE LINK THE VIDEO ASSUMES TO A TRAINING DOCUMENT.

Oh my. Try [Tutorial] Page styles and headers/footers (View topic) • Apache OpenOffice Community Forum - it’s in English, and probably a very difficukt read becaue I wrote it, but at least it jumps to the core problem rather quickly. Page styles are a pain in the you know what just as long as you don’t understand how to work with them, but very easy once you get the hang of them.

Don’t use all upper case in your posts again, it’s almost as bad as using vulgar language. It’s also not in your interest to annoy people who try to help you by forcing them to read all caps. How would you like reading all caps text written in reply to your posts?
