You may have enabled inadvertently “replace” typing mode. You can check that in the bottom toolbar in the box at right of the current language. If it reads Overwrite, click on it to revert to Insert mode (no indication) or hit the Insert key on your keyboard.

This has been driving me crazy for about a year, as I retrain my finger’s muscle memory to using new keyboard shortcuts
