How do I start page numbers at 1 instead of 0.

I have tried all the suggestions on the LibreOffice website and none work. All I want to do is start numbering pages after title-pages at 1 instead of the constant 0 I get.

Please edit your question (the link labelled edit with the slanted pencil) to tell which field you are using and the eventual twist you applied to it. Also, how do you transition from your title page(s) to your main text? You should at least have a forced page break for that.

Though it is not really relevant here, quote your OS and LO versions.

Well, how did you get page 0? This would give us a clue as how to point you in the right question. I ignore that and consider the question, How to define the page number I want to use?

The function you need is TEXT FLOW which is contained in the Paragraph Style Options. On my system you can find this on FORMAT > PARAGRAPH > TEXT FLOW. The quick way to find this is HELP TEXT FLOW.

However, it is essential to understand STYLES. You will find CHAPTER 9 > Working with templates gives lots of help in the Writer Manual, and answers many questions you have not asked yet.
Writer Guides | LibreOffice Documentation - Your documentation for LibreOffice to have access to the Writer book or individual chapters. I prefer myself, the paper version.

Just happened to me, that I was working with two page styles.
One paragraph style (tĂtulo) text flow was related with one page style, and page number set to 1.
First page (and some others) was 0, until I unticked [ ] Page number:. Not clear to me why, but it works.
test page 1 number 0.odt (11.2 KB)

Can you attach the faulty document with fist page 0? Your present sample is correct and I can’t analyse the wrong case.

Thanks for testing.
The original file was created with LibreOffice.
The problem was seen with LibreOffice/7.5.4.1$Linux_X86_64. So it could be an issue with my user profile in Linux.
I will retest later in Safe Mode, and report here.
All is fine with version 7.5.8.2 on Windows.

Hope this helps, found it in the online help sections:

To Start With a Defined Page Number

Now you want some more control on page numbers. You are writing a text document that should start with page number 12.

Click into the first paragraph of your document.

Choose Format - Paragraph - Text flow.

In the Breaks area, enable Insert. Enable With Page Style just to be able to set the new Page number. Click OK.

Note Icon

The new page number is an attribute of the first paragraph of the page.

Yep, but the intriguing part in the original question is page number 0. You can’t get it under normal circumstances (at least, a newbie does not know how). So, I’d like to understand how OP came to it.

We forgot to say that ALL page numbering and page flow assumes that you are storing your documents as standard International format .odt files, which is the default for LibO. And not .doc or .docx, word does things in a different way. Also that you are using styles not manual formatting. Do not forget that ODD numbers will always been on the RIGHT hand pages, look in any book to see this.
The page number will normally be on the page heading or footer, as it is part of the PAGE, not a part of the document text.

@_dave: the page number is not an attribute of any paragraph. It belongs to the page style and is dynamically computed by Writer.

@_ajlittoz The page number can be controlled / changed using the TEXT FLOW option in the first paragraph on a page. I have discovered that you can set the page number to 0 in this option. I agree that the page number is an attribute of the page, but the initial setting is on the paragraph style is it not?

@petermau: only a first paragraph after a forced page break is “special” (otherwise the first paragraph is just another ordinary paragraph). Any page break event causes allocation of a new page, but only one associated with a forced page break send information to the page engine (page style name and forced page number) to reset parameters in the page style. Manual break and paragraph style are equivalent in their effects. The break is a trigger for action(s) in the page.

I’m waiting for an explanation of page number 0. Beginners not knowing the trick to force page number with a break may try to offset the page field whereas this misunderstood parameter is intended for referencing page±offset if it exists. Using the offset to start the page number sequence at some arbitrary point leads to “surprises” like blank page number in the least offending case.
