Why does Writer automatically change the size of certain math formula objects?

I'm not sure if this is a bug, or some quirky feature. When I insert certain math formula objects into Writer, and then save the document, and close and reopen the document, and then double click on the math formula to edit it, and lastly close the formula editor, the size of the object increases by a small amount. I'm using Libre Office Version: 6.1.5.2. on windows 10. Here is a more formal series of steps:

  1. Open a new Writer document
  2. Click Insert, Object, Formula...
  3. Type "sum a" into the editor, without the quotes
  4. Click anywhere on the blank page to close the formula editor
  5. The size of the object shows 0.40 by 0.23 inches
  6. Save the document as ODF Text Document
  7. Close Writer
  8. Open the document
  9. Double click on the object to open the formula editor
  10. Click anywhere on the blank page to close the formula editor
  11. The size of the object is now 0.46 by 0.29 inches

This problem also happens when I insert a matrix using the formula editor. For example, the following will change size: left[ matrix{ a#b ## c#d } right]

On the other hand, if I type "a + b + c" into the editor, and perform the above steps, the object stays the same size.

Edit: After experimenting a bit, I found out that this only happens if you set the default font size in the formula editor to something other than 12. I had it set to 15. If I set the default to 12, but increase the temporary font size to 15, the objects retain their size. Also, if I set the default font size to 15, but decrease the temporary font size to 12, the objects retain their size. It's only when both the default and temporary font size are set to 15 that it happens.
