Writer Problems - page nos and title pages

Hi

I’m trying to have 6 title pages at the beginning of a document (a paperback book layout) and then start the page numbers at 1 on the 7th page. I can do this - insert title pages at the beginning and restart numbering at 1 but I find it always goes wrong. It may look fine but then I notice that Page 1, instead of being really page 7, is shown as page 9 - yet there are only 6 title pages before it. I can’t see two extra pages so why does it say they are there?

Another problem I encounter is disappearing page numbers. I put them in, I close the doc down for another day, then when I open it up the page numbers have disappeared.

Any clues as to what is happening, anyone?

Please, upload a sample file (a real file, not a screenshot) with the problem.

Uploaded example file. Pages which should be 6 and 8 are shown as 7 and 9.

You have two page breaks, one after the other, both going to “page 1.” The two extra pages appear because on each page break you are going from an odd numbered (right) page to another odd numbered (also right) page, so Writer automatically introduces even (left) blank pages before each break. You can see those extra pages going to print preview and selecting “Book Preview” mode: they are labeled “Empty page.”

Note: your document is in doc format and that’s a bad idea. Always use native odt format to work with Writer and only at the end (and only if really needed) export to other formats.

Thanks so much. How do you see the page breaks? I don’t know how to format page breaks to be for left or right or whatever. Thanks for any help you can give.

Page breaks are shown as a dotted line between both pages: by clicking on the dotted line you’ll get a menu. Also, page breaks are properties of a paragraph (and also tables) so if you right click on the paragraph immediately after the break you can access the paragraph settings and, on the Text Flow tab change the page break properties.

Notice that for Writer an odd numbered page is always a “right page” while an even numbered page is always a “left page,” it’s not possible to change that.

Wow! So simple when you know how. Thank you very much. I’ll certainly take a look at your book.
