So: how much better does the site header for the LibO Extensions site look than the site header for the Templates site? Answer: a lot better.
I must have too much time on my hands, as I did a mock up of a revised Templates header:

Thanks, all, for the encouragement! I have contacted the maintainer of the Extensions- and Templates-Site (on this fairly minor matter 
and I’ll update here as @oweng suggests if there is any action resulting.
They liked it (also here). Big thank you to Andreas Mantke from TDF who maintains that site and was encouraging about this small change – as also were those in the comment thread on the original question. It’s a tiny “contribution”, but a good feeling to be part of this open-source community.
