I’ve downloaded it twice. Each time when I choose a document type (Writer) from the first screen the page opens and then locks up at trying to type. Every time. Any ideas? Love to lose MS Word here.

This problem is solved in 4.1. You can try the latest beta from: http://www.libreoffice.org/downloads/pre-releases/
Is there a specific bug related to this, or is it just that you are experiencing the app no longer hangs? I’m asking because I can’t find a related bug report.
You do not provide much in the way of detail about what you are doing at the time of the problem. Does the problem occur as soon as you begin typing? Do you have any extensions installed? It sounds like a hang rather than a crash. There are several open crash+writer+macosx and hang+writer+macosx bugs. Please have a look through those and see if any relate to your particular situation. If any do, please report the bug number back here in a comment in the form “fdo#123456”.
Another thing to consider is resetting your User Profile.
