Why is find-and-replace grayed out

I am in an .ods document with calc. I have selected a range of cells. I navigate to the Edit dropdown to select ‘Find & Replace’, but it is grayed out. Why? I can open the ‘Find’ option, which pops up the little find applet at the bottom of my calc window, and I can then click on the little pencil/magnifying glass icon and lo and behold, up pops the dialog box for replace - which functions as expected. So it is not a problem with permissions (I’m not in read only mode for example) or cell formatting, etc… This happens frequently to me.

Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, Libre Office 4.0.3.3

You don’t mention whether you are running the PPA version of LO or the one from the website. I can’t replicate your problem here under Crunchbang 11 running TDF/LO v4.0.3.3. As shown here the menu item is available. Is there any particular type of content in the selected area that is unusual? I would suggest perhaps trawling the Ubuntu forums / bugs if you are using the PPA version, which in my experience is far more buggy that the native TDF one.

Thanks much for the followup. I did download the TDF version after reading your reply, although prior to extract/install I did once again fire up the PPA version that I am currently running and, lo and behold, the find & replace option was no longer grayed out for the exact same cell range on that spreadsheet (the cells contain a pretty simple formula. Not certain why it suddenly decided to start working – I have the TDF version standing by to install should I experience more wierdness. Again, I truly appreciate the reply!
