Add personalized styles to the navigator in writer

Hello

I have a document whose titles are personalized styles based on the standard style.
Hence none of these titles are present in the navigator. How can I add them in the navigator ?

I thought formerly that this is impossible (you have to use the Title1 etc… styles and personalize these ones). But I recently saw exactly what I mean in the very nice LibreOffice Writer 4.0 user guide.
All the document structure is based on OOoHeading1, OOoHeading2,… styles that are personalized styles linked to OOoHeading style itself linked to the standard style. And these personalized styles are in the navigator.
How can I do exactly the same stuff (with already existing styles if possible)

There does appear to be an issue relating to the Category of new styles when they are created. As an example:

  1. Open a new document.
  2. Insert five lines of text: “Heading A”; “Text body”, “Heading B custom”; “Text body”; and “Heading C”.
  3. Style all three heading lines to use the Heading 1 paragraph style.
  4. Style the two text body lines to use the Text Body paragraph style.
  5. Create a new heading paragraph style (Name of Heading 1 custom; Next Style defaults to the same name; Linked With Heading 1; and leave the Category as All Styles).
  6. Apply the new Heading 1 custom style to “Heading B custom”. The original “Heading B custom” entry that was showing in the Navigator disappears.
  7. Modify the Heading 1 custom style and notice that the Category is now set to Conditional Styles and that this is unable to be changed. I think this is a bug.

The result from the above looks like this. If however at the time of adding the new style the Category of Custom Styles is selected, then applying the new Heading 1 custom style has no effect on the heading entries displayed in the Navigator. Note however that the style in this case (when modified) also displays a Category of Conditional Styles. The result is shown here. I tested this under GNU/Linux running TDF/LOv4.0.3.3.

As the OP indicates the styles in the indicated Write Guide v4.0 use custom styles that do show up in the Navigator. It appears that under the version of LO that I have tested at least there may be an issue with creating new styles.

Please conduct a search to see if any existing related bugs are open. I could not find any, but I would be surprised if there isn’t one for this. If no bug can be found please file a bug and provide as much information as possible. The QA team will be happy to help you triage your bug in the bugtracker.

Please post a link to any bugs you file in a comment below using the format “fdo#123456”.

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. The style category behaviour is indeed a little bit strange. But in my version of LO, whatever the style category you choose, the personalized style is never shown in the navigator. I don’t know however what is the utility of these categories and how they work, so I’m not sure about what could be considered as a bug. But in the meanwhile, I found how to do what I want (see my answer).

To change the styles used in the navigator, you simply need to go in Tools - Outline Numbering and then in the paragraph style box, define which personalized style (whatever the style they are linked with) you want for each heading level.
Then the chosen styles are used in the navigator instead of the default heading 1, heading 2,… and these style are also used automatically when you create a table of contents (although you can also change that in the “edit index” box).

Excellent! Thank you for reporting your solution.

@ Gilles - Let me assume that you mean the “Styles and Formatting” window when you wrote “Navigator”

When you “personalized” styles, did you modify the existing styles or did you create new styles?

If you modify an original style, the style name does not change and the change is inside this style.

When you create a new style then the location depends on the settings you use

In above example I created a New style of “Text body” and keep in the category “Custom Styles”. Therefore in the “Styles and Formatting” window’s view “Hierarchical”. the new style will be seen as a sub style of “Text body” with the name I give the new style.

Thus depending on what you did you will see your style in the Styles and Formatting window.

I recommend to read about this in the wiki or manual.

The reference by the OP is to the Navigator and the fact that custom styles either show up or don’t depending on how they are created. It does appear to be a bug. I will explain in an answer.

@ROSt53, thanks for your reply but I indeed meant the real navigator. But your answer made me discover the hierarchical view of the style that I never used before but that I will certainly use in the future !!
