how do you type accents? Trying to use for Portuguese

I am trying to type Portuguese words and cannot get the accents - please advise how I can do this?

This question is strongly linked to the OS. So, which OS? LO version? which is your OS native language (locale)? If different from Portuguese, keyboard type?

Edit your question (don’t answer) to provide more information.

Hi, thanks for answering. I am on OS High Sierra, 10.13.6 and English is my native language. I have tried using both the US keyboard and the Portuguese Keyboard

It’s quite a long time since I last used MacOS X. You should have a keyborad utility allowing you to probe which character is sent when you push modifier keys (shift, alt, ctrl, apple, shift lock). Accents, aka. “dead keys” are displayed with an outline or background of some sort. With US keyboard configured, I doubt many accents are available, at least acute and grave, maybe diaeresis and circumflex, all with multiple modifier combination.

Eventually, you can customise the keyboard config file to add your own combinations (do it on a copy!).

As a last resort (this is not user-friendly for repetitive typing), Insert>Special characters and choose from the Unicode directory.

okay thanks so much. I will try this and revert. Calla
