When an update is available, why do I get the message “The automatic download of the update is currently not available.”? Also, if it isn’t possible to update directly from within the application, why is there a (ghosted) “Install” button in the update window?
LibreOffice added this feature in February 2012 (the first LibreOffice release was in January 2011!). I think this is excellent progress.
Eventually it will evolve into automatic, partial updates. But it takes time and man power.
This does not appear to be correct. I have OpenOffice.org 2.3 (release date 2007-09-17) installed on an old WinXP machine and this appears to have the same “update checking” mechanism that Libre Office (4.1.1.2) currently has. In fact, the icon and placement is exactly the same. To be honest, I’ve not used a later version of Open/Libre Office until LibreOffice 4.1.1.2, so was this feature removed in later versions?!
You are quite right. I apologize for the imprecision. In fact this was introduced in OOo 2.0.4 (back in October 2006). In February 2012 LO started it’s own update server which allowed it to automatically check for updates. My answer is now corrected.
Uhm, it’s been 8 years since this was first implemented and not a single time has it worked for me.
I have the same question. I get tired from downloading the full installation package and especially running it manually.
This is annoying. I understand that it is a new feature, but a feature that doesn’t work, new or not, is not a feature. I will not download the entire 200+MB application just to go up one DOT DOT revision (3.5.4 vs 3.5.3.). If the update was substantial, then it would not be a minor revision, but a major one. Now I have to turn off the non-functional auto-update feature.
PS: Why is LibreOffice soooooo slow when you run it for the first time of the day? I can understand (a little) that it takes a while the VERY first time you use it, but when you fire it up the first time for the day (after the PC has been off), it still take an inordinately long amount of time. Hummmm? Sorry - off topic.
It IS working. It warns you when a new version is available. Whether you choose to update or not, it’s up to you. Regarding loading time: Unloading unused dictionaries and extensions helps a lot. BTW version 3.6 is considerably faster (it is noticeable on my netbook).
If it is working it is news to me. It is still annoying as ever, especially since I switched from OO just for this reason.
@Bert1, why do you consider that it is not working? It warns about updates by default and can be switched off and checked manually…
I’d say it’s not working because automatic download and install never works. When I check for updates I’m given the option to download manually from the website, and it’s never an update (delta) version, it’s always the full version of the newest installer.
That tells me updates aren’t working, unless the plan is to force users to download and install the full version every time there’s a point release.
@morganestes, unfortunately that is the plan currently. There is no other way to update (not even a minor dot dot version as user MrD mentioned) without downloading the full 200MB…As I mentioned in my answer “Eventually it will evolve into automatic, partial updates. While I too would like to see the Automatic update system working, I understand that there are more important things for the Volunteer coders and engineers to work on before adding a something like that. they are still finding potentially problematic bugs and also working on a mobile edition. I would also like to say that if any of you who are complaining about lack of features are programers or developers, why not help bring about the feature you think are missing.
Is this working? I check for updates, and it tells me I’m current… but there are updates available. (Current at version 4.3.2.2, update 4.3.3 is available, and has been for 2 weeks.
@CraigK, the updated version number is manually modified in some server (it’s beyond my understanding why this isn’t done by a script…) so some delay is normal (depending on human availability).
The update message is misleading. The notification says an update is available, but when you go to get it, there is no update, you have to download the full program to get the update. Until they get the updates working the same way that the rest of the software industry uses this feature, a note should be included to indicate, to get the update you must download & install the new full version, but you don’t have to de-install the old version (at least for Windows 8) & you won’t lose any program settings you may have changed in the old version.
