Libreoffice 6.2.3 x64 installer mentions list of sensitive system files *solved*

Edit: For anyone stumbling across this issue in the future: The list provided contatined names of processes using file(s) the LO installer needed to update. No security issue here as I initially thought.

Hi,

I just tried to install LO 6.2.3 on a fresh Win 10 box and choked on my morning coffee when the installer said it needed to update the following files that are in use (list somewhat shortened):

  • Cryptographic Services
  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant
  • Network List Service
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Windows Defender SmartScreen
  • Windows Push Notifications Systems Service
  • Windows Update

Did you guys get p0wned or what?

Cheers,
Johan

No - we are LibreOffice users like you.

So which “quite sensitive files” were going to be updated by installer specifically? Or did you confuse processes (that could e.g. use some common component, like VS redistributable) with files (which list you are unfortunately not shown at the dialog - because Windows Installer service doesn’t provide you)?

Also some chained (previous) updates (e.g., Windows Update earlier that day) could have left your system in a “reboot needed” state, when some services (from that list) used files from those updates, and now falsely show up in this list… so trying to reboot then reattempt installation could help exclude this scenario.

Thanks Mike, I will try a reboot and reinstallation. I did confuse “processes” with “files” as you mentioned. The list got me scared

Thanks Mike, a reboot solved the issue (as so often with Windows
