How Turn Off Highlighting??

I entered text in a paragraph & highlighted the last sentence (yellow). When I go to next paragraph & try to enter text it is highlighted - if I go to highlighting pen (top of page) & try to click on “no fill” I get a paint bucket & it moves around the page - when I try to get cursor where I want to I cannot enter anything - if I click on “white” colour it doesn’t work either to turn off actual highlighting feature. Can anyone help!!! I’ve seen questions on this but no actual answer that would help me.

‘HOW TURN OFF HIGHLIGHTING??’

Please don’t yell! It won’t affect answers. Will edit Title.

There are two small “glitches” with the highlighting tool.

  • you must swipe the paint bucket on a sequence of characters, just clicking to enable highlighting for future text is not enough

  • since you can highlight several sequences successively, you must notify Writer you’re done; press Esc for that

Remember that highlight is a character attribute. It is not reset by a paragraph mark and the effect persists until you change it.

Also, using the highlight button creates a direct formatting which can badly interfere with styles. The “correct” way would be to create an adequate character style and apply it instead.

Thank you for responding to my question. I have tried the “esc” button after I finish the highlighting but doesn’t seem to work for me. Sorry I am so dense on this “writer” program - I am used to “Word” and cannot wrap my head around this one.

I was going to try your other idea "create an adequate character style but am not sure how to do that either. Sorry! Would you be able to direct me in that - tk u so much.

I recommend you read the downloadable manual to get an idea on the principles and possibilities. After that, you can use the built-in help (which is not designed as a tutorial but as a quick reminder on elementary commands).

Just select the new text and turn off highlighting.
