Redesign tool for borders in Table Bar

I feel the border tools in the Table Bar not intuitive, and difficult to use. IMO the major flaws are the following:

  • Buttons do not toggle the status of a border. If I clic on “left border”, the border is drawn. If I clic on “left border” again, I expect it to be removed. But it is not.
  • Tools displaying “blank” borders in button icons actually remove some borders (and it is impossible to guess which border will be removed). Instead, they should only toggle the status of “drawn” borders. (For example, if you clic on the icon with 4 blank borders, LibreOffice removes the left and bottom borders, but leaves top and right borders unchanged… WHY?)

I suggest to take inspiration from the main competitor’s border tool

Thank you!

I am not entirely clear what it is you are referring to. Do you mean the Borders button on the Table toolbar:

… or the border settings under Table > Table Properties… > Borders tab?

I imagine you are referring to the former. There are currently two related enhancement requests:

  • fdo#34398, Writer HELP: add tooltips to FORMATTING of tables changing borders of cells.
  • fdo#38543, FORMATTING: Format Table Borders dialog should show current settings.

Neither of those is specifically the same as your request though, which appears more concerned with the Borders button on the Table toolbar having a toggle behaviour and a more obviously consistent behaviour at that. You may need to file these as separate enhancement requests as they possibly relate to different matters.

Please file an enhancement bug and provide as much information as possible. Don’t forget to mark your bug as an ‘enhancement’. The QA team will be happy to help you triage your feature request in the bugtracker.

Please post a link to any bugs you file in a comment below using the format “fdo#123456”.

Thanks!

Enhancement bug fdo#66008 filed. Thank you!

Thanks for reporting your bug number back. I have added a link to this thread for clarity.
