Calc links open in browser twice

I use Calc to concatenate terms into hyperlinks. These hyperlinks are then clicked on to launch in my default browser window. Recently, I upgraded to Ubuntu 18.04 from 14.04. In Ubuntu 18.04, the hyperlinks launch twice (i.e., two tabs) and always in a new window for the default browser, even if a browser window is already open. It does not matter which browser is the default. It could be Firefox, Waterfox, Chrome, Chromium or Opera.

I don’t think this is a browser issue. Through trial and error trying to debug this, links from other third-party applications open as tabs in already open browser instances and only as one tab.

Does anyone have this same odd behaviour and is there a solution?

Thanks for taking time to read this.

Please upload an anonymized version of the Calc sheet which is opening a browser twice. I could test on Ubuntu 18.04 and please tell us about your LibreOffice Version and from where you installed it (Base Ubuntu distruntion repo, PPA, libreoffice.org, …)?

Aside – This isn’t the old oneclick-twoclick problem, is it? In Windows, two clicks are needed to open a link, whereas in Linux sometimes only one click is needed. Or maybe I just don’t understand the problem.

Hello all LibreOffice enthusiasts

I can confirm this challenge. Using LibreOffice Calc 7. With a fresh new spreadsheet. Using Debian 10 Buster.

Find the steps to reproduce into this attached Calc file (9,0 Ko)

Excellent steps to reproduce. I get two pages opened in browser (Firefox) in Windows 10, LO 6.4.7.2, 7.1.5.2 & 7.2.2.2. Can you post that as a bug, see How to Report Bugs in LibreOffice - The Document Foundation Wiki ?

I see a similar recent bug, tdf#138187, that was resolved so hopefully will be quick. Cheers, Al

Thanks for testing and sharing your results @EarnestAl

I’ll happily post a bug. After I’m done, I’ll add a link here for those interested to contribute a patch or anything else to their liking.

Hi all  Done. I created a new Ticket at https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=145671

Any volunteer for a patch? All are welcome to join the efforts. I would be happy to contribute testing and documentation if needed.

Hi @dwlamb lamb and all LibreOffice enthusiasts  Until this challenge is resolved, below are the steps for a temporary workaround. Which opens only ONE link. Joy  This can be done either with keyboard only, or with a mix of mouse & keyboard.

Steps

  1. Using LibreOffice Calc version 7, select the cell which contain the link

  2. Press F2 to enter the cell Edit mode

  3. Choose one of the following two options:

    1. Option 1 of 2: Using only the keyboard. Place the cursor in front or the link. Press and hold Shift key. Then press on Right key to select the full link.

    2. Option 2 of 2: Move the cursor in front of the link

  4. Press Shift+F10. An handy cell contextual menu will open.

  5. Select this Open Hyperlink / Ouvrir l’hyperlien option. This screenshot below shows this option.

  6. Only ONE link will open into your browser. YAYAYA. Enjoy.
