Strange behaviour in Writer creating a data table?

Status 1 screenshot shows a table with plenty of space to the right of the table.
Status 2 screenshot shows the table after I have added an extra column on the right. This has compressed the existing columns to the left, so that I then have to correct this using the double-headed arrow function.

And secondly, re this forum, how do I find my messages when I come in again later?

Could it be that you just missed the fact that the table has a fixed width (see the grey ruler above) and you just want to drag the ruler to the right (equals to drag the border of the table rightmost to the right)?

There are two situations which may explain the behaviour. I recommend you enable View>Formatting Marks to discriminate them, though a look at the horizontal ruler provides a hint when the the cursor just outside the table.

  • Paragraph indents (“margins”)

A table by default extends from paragraph margin to paragraph margin. If you change the “margins” (technically called “indent” for paragraphs), you can get what you see.

  • Customised table

With cursor inside table, Table>Properties, Table tab. If Alignment is not Automatic, you can set explicitly the width of the table.

In both cases, table width is fixed. Then columns are spread within this width. This is why adding a column shrinks the others.
