LibreOffice for OS X always crashing after starting the application

LibreOffice 4.1.0.4 and 4.0.4.2 and 3.6.7 are crashing on my Intel iMac with OSX 10.8.3 within seconds after opening the application. Always, without exception. The application opens, the splash screen appears, I choose “Text Document” - and LibreOffice crashes.

Deleting all - visible and invisible - configuration files and restarting does not help. Repairing permissions does not help. Deleting all cache files does not help. Deleting the user profile file does not help.

NeoOffice 3.3 works without problems.

The error message in the crash report is always

  • Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
  • Thread 0 Crashed:: Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

and a search for this on Google shows that this seems to happen to quite some people and there have been also quite some bug reports about it.

I have opened a new bug report about this here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=67326.

Which version of Java are you running? If all three different versions are producing the same crash report this would suggest an external factor to me. Also, try and ensure as few other applications are running at the time as there has been a previous report of an application conflict.

For the convenience of others here is a list of all open bugs for MacOS that contain “EXC_BAD_ACCESS”. Bug fdo#66485 may also be related but it is lacking info at present.

Java 7 Update 25 (build 1.7.0_25-b15) - that’s as far as I know the latest version for OS X 10.8.

I’m sure, too, that there is a conflict with one of the standard kernel extensions or one of my login items. It’s just too time consuming to go through all possibilities to find out which one.

The pity is that I used to recommend LibreOffice and OpenOffice to many people and don’t feel confident anymore to do this and let them rather buy Microsoft Office for now.
