How do I make sure I don't lose docs when dropping MS Office 365?

Hi. I want to drop MS Office 365 when the subscription ends 12/5/19. (I hate that program) I have about 18 years of WORD and ACCESS files that I don’t want to lose. I will back them off onto flash drives before 365 dies. I have already installed Libre Office and I am liking it very much. Anyway, should my files reload okay into Libre Office or do I need to do something else to ensure that I don’t lose them.
Thanks for your help.

Hello,

As a note, the ACCESS files are not directly readable in LibreOffice. At best you can create a connection to the database and get access to the tables and possibly some queries. However nothing on forms, reports or probably most of any VB code can be used in Base.

There surely was some effort at MS to ensure that this “full migration away” cannot easily occur. Commercial software providers once being in the position of a market leader will always prefer customer lock-in over quality – and surely some Mm (Mega meter) over compatibility with free software.
Yes. That’s just an opinion.

A couple of years ago, when our file service was migrated to OneDrive, a couple of users lost all their files when an error in the OneDrive client sync interpreted some account deactivation as a deletion. User moved all files to synced folder. User license was lost. Files were deleted on the service, and the deletion was synced to the local folder of the user’s PC. So it seemed…

The gist of that: Do take a copy of everything you have in the cloud if it is worth keeping. Don’t trust the local, synced folder on your computer. Move everything “home free”.

When consumer subscription ends, MS will usually give you a month to reconsider (nag time ; expect some emails) before terminating the account. With enterprise accounts it terminates immediately.

There is only one way to find out: load your documents in a recent LibreOffice release and determine whether they display and work sufficiently for your needs. If you decide to work on documents, best save them to the native OpenDocument ODF file format (.odt, .ods, …) first before modifying them and work on that copy. Also, as was already stated in the comments, MS-Access files can be used only as database connection, programmed Access-Applications will not work.
