download: 'buying' vs 'free download'

Albeit only $8, Amazon description narrative & review states by ‘buying’
you receive many extra features (??), also download is by “virus-free” cd.

** Truly appreciative of these world-wide responses…I am quite techno-inept,
dangerously close to an idiot. So when I ‘accidentally discovered’ the many
alternatives to overpriced MS Office subscriptions, I shopped Amazon and
decided to: take a risk on unknown (to me) software…pick between two-
Apache vs Libre…read both are FREE downloads!!..read reviews that
said “Amazon’s cd is virus-free-without risk of internet download” which is
where my hesitation/caution/afore-mentioned ignorance generated query.

I would rather download directly from www.libreoffice.org and give them a donation of $5 (well used) than “buying” $8 from any commercial company which might have put a trojan inside for commercial purpose and baiting you with “many extras features” which you will find for free as well on the internet and the official website (www.libreoffice.org), if “feature” means really something in that particular case.

as well as many templates https://extensions.libreoffice.org/templates

if you want to feel secured by “buying” give it to libreoffice, it’s them who develop LO and your money will be used to improve it even more.

It is mostly about trust.

Do you trust The Document Foundation to deliver software which works for your purposes and will not harm the functionality and integrity of your computer? I guess you do, or else you would not be asking the question in the first place.

Do you trust that Amazon entity to the same? Technically, they may have added programming (added functionality/reliability, security “hardening”, but also potentially intrusive “trojans”.) as well as additional material (templates, wizards), storage media to install from, and infrastructure (cloud storage, user support) to add value. Most likely they haven’t. (Added value, that is.)

The claims to “free user support” usually means this site and forum.openoffice.org .

Do you trust that the added value (if any) is worth whatever payment they are asking?

From what I can see you would be paying for the convenience of having the software on a CD. You also get “some fonts and coupons” which are probably not worth much.

For me not worth it. I can burn my own CD for “convenience” ,

Agree with it being about trust. I have had zero problems with downloaded LibreOffice.
