Table of contents "Contents 3" is not right aligned

In the table of contents of my document, the page numbers just for Heading 3 are slightly indented from the right margin. So it looks something like the following:

 1 Header ............................... 1
    1.1 Header ...........................2
          1.1.1 Header ................3
                   1.1.1.1 Header ........4

I can’t see anything different in the style for “Contents 3” that would do this. Any ideas?

I have checked the tab settings for Contents 1, Contents 2, Contents 3, etc., and there is one right tab set at 16.51 cm for all of them, which is the right margin throughout the document.

(However, and I don’t know if this is germane, but when I put my cursor in any of the table of contents lines, the ruler moves to the left about 1 cm, so starts at 0 about 1 cm before the left margin, and then the right margin is at about 17.5 cm. However, this is the same for all the Contents styles.)

Have you checked the TOC itself with the following procedure?

  • right-click in the TOC and Edit Table/Index
  • go to Entries tab
  • compare the setting for the tab in level 1-3:
    • click on level
    • click on the T button in the Structure line
    • read the tab properties; in particular is Align right always checked?
