LO hangs on Tools > Customize

I have LO 6.3.3.2 on Xubuntu 18.04, up to date, except that I downloaded it from LO rather than install the version in the Ubuntu repositories. The display is UHD (3840x2160).

I usually use only Writer, which I have in a window by itself, along with Formatting and Styles toolbars floating off the window (see screenshot below). As you can see the Styles palette is illegible because the line spacing is inadequate. Interestingly, if I go into Tools > Options > Personalization and select any theme the text in the palette immediately rights itself and appears with correct line spacing. But the second I close the Options window the line spacing changes back to being illegible.LibreOffice_Screenshot_2019-12-27.png

In an effort to work around this problem I decided to try Tools > Customize, but when I click on it the entire program hangs. All my other applications work just fine. I need some ideas. All suggestions gratefully received!

I did that, but it made no difference.

I have read elsewhere that LO on Xfce desktop environment needs integration for gtk3. Looking at the .deb files that I downloaded for LO 6.3.3.2 I find libreoffice-gnome.deb and libreoffice-kde.deb, but nothing for any version of gtk. Yet, when I look at the LO .deb files that Ubuntu maintains in its repositories for Ubuntu 18.04 I find three libreoffice-gtk*.deb files, for gtk, gtrk2 and gtk3, as well as the -gnome and -kde files.

I did not mention it in my original post, but the scrollbars in LO are the width of a pencil lead; too thin to hit easily with the mouse. This is because the 6.3.3.2 that I downloaded and installed does not contain support for gk. I don’t know if this is what is causing LO to hang on Tools > Customize, but it’s certainly possible, and I need to install something to get support for gtk anyway because of the scrollbar problem. Just now I downloaded the latest version, 6.3.4, and its file list also lacks gtk support.

I decided to try installing the gtk3 .deb file from the Ubuntu repositories alongside the 6.3.3.2 that I downloaded. But when I tried to install it I got a warning that it required a dozen more .deb files, basically the rest of the LO suite from the Ubuntu 18.04 repositories.

At this point I have to install a .deb file for gtk3 support for 6.3.3.2, and I don’t know where I might find it. (A side question is why the current version that you can download lacks such an essential file.) If I can’t find a way to install support for gtk3 on 6.3.3.2, then I will have to uninstall it and install the version in the Ubuntu repositories.

Comments or suggestions?

Nobody had any suggestions, so I uninstalled 6.3.3.2 and then installed the version from the Ubuntu 18.04 repositories (Version: 6.0.7.3 Build ID: 1:6.0.7-0ubuntu0.18.04.10). It no longer hangs on Tools > Customize, but now I have lots of other problems, mostly with toolbars and view options. I’ll post those in a new thread.
