Master document and style

I need to create a master document to create a book (I have over 200 files ready to import). For the master document I want a heading, and a footer (name of the particular subdocument and page number) and for the main body text I want two columns.
I am unsure where I should start. Start creating styles in master document before importing subdocuments? It doesn’t seem possble to create styles in master document?
Thanks.

Edit: (thanks for the comment). Windows 10 Home. LO version: 6.2.8.2 (x64). Book: A4, nearly 100 pages, spiral bound, header at top to relate to name of chapter (two or three pages), footer to relate to page number: on left hand side on left page and right hand side on right page. Thanks.

A master document has all properties of a common document plus the ability to import part documents. You can create styles there and they will take precedence over those in part documents if they have the same name.

From your description, it seems you rather need a template to guarantee every file in your collection will have the same look and feel.

The question about header and footer can be solved with a carefully crafted page style (or a small set of these).

But to give accurate advice, you need to provide more “technical” details about your OS, LO version and structure of your book. Do that editing your question, not answering.

I must fix urgent family issues and won’t be available before a week. I’ll give you clues when back unless another contributor has answered.

Designing styles in the master document differently can be very confusing.

My proposition:

  • Create an empty document with all the styles you need, both in the individual documents and in the master document.

  • You also use this blank document as a template for the master document as well as for the individual document.

  • Fill each blank document, i.e. your created template, with your plain text and apply the style sheets.

I wish you success.
