In DRAW, Can a line that connects two objects, have more than the current 3 directions. To get around lots of objects on a page

I have lots of objects on a page, and to get from one object to another requires me to have a connection line that has more than just the three planes (horizontal, vertical, horizontal etc). I currently can’t get around some of the many objects. If I could add 1-2 more 90 degree angles that would solve the problem. Many thanks for you thoughts/ideas. This is a great program.

My suggestion is to add an intermediate short line between your objects. Thus instead of a sequence

 start_object connector end_object

you have

 start_object connector_1 intemediate_segment connector_2 end_object

Take care to constraint the intermediate segment to vertical or horizontal otherwise the connectors will not be glued to the extremities: the connectors can only be linked to the middle of the bounding box edges.

This proposal is tedious but if you need it only on a few object pairs are affected, this can’t be that bad. Of course, you can add several intermediate segments in case of need.

If your connecting lines have arrows on their extremities, only the last connector (and possibly the first one) should have an arrow on only one extremity.

  • Add an intermediate short line

Use the Insert Line tool to add a line to your drawing. The length of the line may be adjusted afterwards.

  • Constrain the intermediate segment

If you press the shift key while you draw the line, the line is forced to be oriented 0°, 45°, 90° or 135°. Avoid the diagonal directions because the glue points for the connectors are at the middle of the bounding box sides. With 0° or 90°, on of the sides has 0-length. Therefore, the middle of this side is the same as the end of the segment and the connector will look as if attached the the segment end.

For an existing segment, select it and Format>Position & Size or right-click and Position & Size. You can then adjust the orientation to any angle, notably 0° and 90°.

**Hi, thanks for your reply. Could you explain what you mean by “add an intermediate short line” & “constrain the intermediate segment”. I’ve searched the online help and can’t find anything about that. Many thanks. **
