Will LibreOffice Mac open and save older MS Word docs?

I have Mac devices (around 2019) plus older iPhone and iPad. I am desperate for your help. I have work-related MS Word docs (v 2005 & 2011) but those versions won’t work on new Apple computers. I find Microsoft NOT user friendly, so am hopeful LibreOffice WILL work, open and save older MS Word docs. If LibreOffice for Mac WILL work, which version should I download please? Thank you in advance.

All you need: LibreOffice

You can try it!

LO Writer will open those old M$ Word files but expect compatibility issues.

If your documents have a relatively simple structure and don’t use advanced features (sophisticated numbering of paragraphs, complex tables, …), you won’t have serious problems, but check the document the first time you open it.

Complex structure documents may need to be reworked.

Once you find the document correct, save it as .odt, not .doc(x) to completely get rid of aforementioned problems. You say yourself that Word 2005 & 2011 no longer work on your Mac. So you won’t have any opportunity to edit this format. Remember also that M$ Word claims to be able to read .odt files. In case, you have to transmit a file to somebody else, send it .odt and let him/her have the compatibility issue. Don’t forget to attach a .pdf version to serve as a reference.
