I tried to make a file "Read only". Works fine, However, after using a password protection (saving AND closing), I wish to remove the "Read Only". I open the file again , enter Edit Mode (why do we need that), open properties, press unprotect, enter the password and get the message "wrong password". The pass word I used was 123

Good I did it on a test file.

Office Libre does not recognize file protection password

I tried to make a file "Read only"

So is that "file protection" (to prevent unauthorized opening of the file) or "edit protection" to allow unrestricted view, but not edits?

Thanks Mike. I made the file Read only, and protected with a password so that only me could edit it I corrected the question title.

(Assuming you meant password to enter Edit mode, not protection to open file:) There are at least two ways to unprotect the file, and you seem to do it wrong.

  1. You may open the file in read-only mode, and use Save As to new name, without using Save with password checkbox in the Save As dialog. No need to use password at all. Of course, you need to use a new name, because otherwise the protection would loose any meaning.
  2. You may follow the way you used; but when you uncheck the Open file read-only checkbox in properties' Security tab, just close the dialog using OK, and save. No need to enter password second time. And yes, it makes sense to enter password initially to enter Edit mode, since otherwise it would make no sense.
