How can I unprotect "read only" document on a mac?

Every time I open a doc sent to me, I get the message “This document is in Read Only Mode”.
I’ve seen solutions here that say to go to Tools, Options, and uncheck the Protect Document box.
I don’t see that on my Mac.
I’ve added “Unprotect” button to the options when I open a doc, but it’s unusable because it’s greyed out.

What does this mean exactly? Do you get the document via email and open the file (attachment) via double click? If yes - try to check, whether saving the file to some directory and open the saved file also shows a “read only”.

**PS:** What on Windows/Linux is `Tools -> Options` translates to `LibreOffice -> Preferences` on macOS.

It means that when I receive a document via email and open it, I get the message “this document is in read only mode”. Most of the times I can create a copy to edit and save a copy. What I’d like is to not get this message at all. I did go to LibraOffice - Preferences, but there is no option from there to unprotect a document.

Sigh … you just repeat what you already wrote and don’t add any accuracy. Please understand that it makes a difference, whether you double click the attachment within your email program, which may result in your document being stored in a temporary directory of your email program and thus opens read-only (every file download from this site behaves like that), or whether you store your file into some user directory and open that saved file with LibreOffice.

You’ve just answered my question. I saved the document, then opened it from the saved position. No error message this time. :slight_smile:
With the old version of Libra Office, this step wasn’t necessary. I could open it directly from the email, edit the doc, then save it.
Thank you.

Thanks to Opaque, this is the solution that works for me:

I saved the document from the email, then opened it from it’s saved folder. No error message this time.
