Unable to change page number style

Win 7-64
Libre Office Version: 6.3.5.2 (x64)

I have two page styles (TOC and Default Style) and I would like them to have different page number styles. I have changed the page styles, styles->page->modify->Page->Page Layout Settings->Page Numbers and clicked on apply. No numbers in footer. Put my curser in the footer and did insert->page number, the page numbers appeared in the style selected for the page I was on but the Page Layout Settings styles are ignored and the entire document inherits the one page number style. Can’t seem to change one without changing the other.

I have done insert->Manual Page->Default Style on the first paragraph following the TOC. Doesn’t work.

I have double clicked a page number in the footer and changed its style. That style is inherited throughout the entire document.

I don’t know how to unlink the page number styles so that TOC and Default Style are different. I’ve read the help and looked at some questions and I think I’m doing things correctly.

Document is @ https://slipbits.com/park_paseo_cc_and_rs/. It is a retyped version of a 1978 document that is meant to be identical, given a page, line and word, the word and word spelling in the original and retyped version should be the same.

This is an “I don’t know what I am doing or did” answer to this question.

  1. I ensured that the modify->page->page layout->page number was set correctly. The TOC showed Roman Numbers with no problem. No page numbers showed in the Default Style pages, so I did an insert->page number and page numbers appeared (Arabic Numbers) starting at one (1).

Problem is solved. Don’t ask me how.
