Writer: Find & Replace in Selection

Using LibreOffice 6.4.2.2 on macOS 10.14.6. I’m working on a large document >160 pgs including bibliography. Today I needed to do a Find and Replace operation - replacing “.” with “,” in a selected paragraph.

I’ve done this before but this time didn’t notice the checkbox for Current Selection Only in the Find & Replace Dialog Box.

The operation changed every “.” into a “,” throughout the doc. I continued to work, after checking the affected paragraph, oblivious to the changes throughout the doc. I made further edits and by the time I noticed Undo changes was unsuccessful.

I have backups on other drives but they were a day or two old. I also make regular use of the Export to pdf function which enabled recovering the work.

I think it would be useful if the default behaviour in the Find & Replace function is to detect if there is a selection and have the Current Selection Only checked by default. And for the user to manually uncheck it if they need to.

Thanks
