I am trying to add header using insert, but header/footer option is grayed out

I cannot add a header to a spreadsheet because, under Insert, the header/footer options are grayed out. Why?

Hello,

most probably because options

Format -> Page -> Tab: Header -> [ ] Header on
Format -> Page -> Tab: Footer -> [ ] Footer on

are deactivated.

Hope that helps.

format page, select activate header and footer but if you close document or libreoffice you need to make it manual each time… what to do to fix it?

This is clearly a bug in v7 - where to report it?
I can confirm that the condition does not persist after the document is closed

This reference is most unhelpful and less than intuitive in filing this bug. .How to Report Bugs in LibreOffice - The Document Foundation Wiki

If someone can guide me through the process or point to where this bug has already been reported, that would be most helpful.

@GrahamLees see my comment on bug in 7.2.x in Keep Header & Footer from Template File, how is it done?

I find it’s easier to search for bugs by using a normal search engine. Enter your search terms followed by a site limitation, something like
Calc 7.2 header site:bugs.documentfoundation.org
. [EDIT: updated address] You’ll need to check the address as that is by memory from my phone. The important thing is that “site:” focuses the search on the site.

I have since found the bug report herewhich confirms it persist in v 7.2.2.2 and beyond…

But headers and footers are saved in 7.1.7.2, so for work, use the Stable version.

The answer provided by anon73440385 to turn on headers and footers is correct.
If the headers and footers are not retained after saving, closing and re-opening, and you are using any 7.2 version, then you can install version 7.1.7 instead which will save the data.

but what might be lost by downgrading? What was the purpose of the upgrade in the first place? Was it to fix some other unsatisfactory issue which could similarly be returned by downgrading?
It’s not a satisfactory state of affairs and the ubuntu repos will just restore it back again… - worse if the element restored was a security issue which was addressed!

See LibreOffice 7.2 Community: Release Notes - The Document Foundation Wiki

There are two versions offered for download at https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/:

  • the latest which is “If you’re a technology enthusiast, early adopter or power user, this version is for you!”. This is currently 7.2.2.2 which is the current bug fixed version of 7.2.x but has had fewer bug fixes than the 7.1.x series by virtue of being more recent

  • and a more stable version which says next to it “This version is slightly older and does not have the latest features, but it has been tested for longer.”. This is currently 7.1.7.2 which is the current bug fixed version of 7.1.x (and the final version)

You might like to look at https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan to see how the version lifetime is planned.

I believe there is a way to download and install the version that you want in Ubuntu rather than always receiving the bleeding edge version. I am not expert in this area.

The current version release in the repos is 7.2.2.2 stable - and is not bleeding edge. It’s supposed to be correct.
The odd thing is that any header already saved is retained so that when you do re-select the header as outlined in post #2

it is restored without the need to re-enter it.

See comment 9 in tdf#144184 , footer data loss

The content of comment 9 is incorrect - I cannot reproduce it from Linux in 7.2.2.2
Further https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=144184 post comment 32 confirms that the bug still exists and is being worked on as at 15th October 2021

Updated version 7.2.3.2 still has the header issue as described above.

Thank you so very much. I just tried anon’s method and IT WORKS!
