Libre Office keeps crashing on startup

Hello

I am running Fedora 18 with KDE desktop. I am now in the middle of a project and LibreOffice started crashing all the time. As soon as I start an instance of ‘Writer’ or ‘Calc’, they startup, and either crash immediately, or crash as soon as I move the mouse to the top menu.

I do not believe that the problem lies necessarily with those applications. I have reinstalled LibreOffice as well as Java, which I think is used by LibreOffice , at least for some functionality. But the problem persists. I don’t know how to diagnose this. I get little pop-ups from KDE and the Automatic Bug Reporting tool. The message is

“A problem in libreoffice-core-3.6.7.2-4.fc18 package has been detected”

It also says libreoffice crashed. Process /usr/lib64/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin was killed by signal 11 (SIGSEGV)

To continue my work I am running LibreOffice in MS Windows on VirtualBox, but this is annoying and clumsy, and I hope I can somehow fix this, but frankly I have no idea how to go about it.

Any ideas anyone on how to proceed to diagnose this?

Thanks, Peter

Try resetting user profile. https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile

I have reset the user profile, but the crashes are still happening. The executable loads, recovers the previous document, but then as soon as I move my pointer to a menu, the windows disapears, and I get a message from KDE about 'a problem in the libreoffice-core-3.6.7.2-4.fc18 package has been detected. Its very frustrating.

Please help. LibreOffice ran fine for 10 month. Now it it unusable and I have no idea where to get help.

Thanks, Peter

OK, I solved my immediate problem by installing OpenOffice and uninstalling LibreOffice.

OpenOffice did not crash but did give me an error message, that some of the files I was trying to open were ‘locked’ since about a week ago. I wonder if this could have contributed to the LibreOffice problems, or whether they are a result of the LibreOffice problems.

Food for thought tor the LibreOffice Developers - hopefully there will be one reading this.

Thanks, Peter

Afaik, latest LO release is 4.1.2.3. Did you try that? Also I suggest creating a bug report for this problem. Please attach any crash log available regarding this problem and or a certain file that produces the crash when being opened. Then QA will happily look into the issue.

I am also facing same problem, Libreoffice 4.2 is not starting in KDE desktop. But in XFCE, LXDE and gnome desktop libreoffice is working properly.

The original reporter has answered their own question and provided details about what was causing the problem (locked files). Please ask a new question for your issue, as the original question related to v3.6 and yours relates to v4.2. It sounds like a KDE-specific issue, but it is difficult to tell. Thanks.
