You don’t tell anything about your environment - how do you expect a sound answer?
Dear Opaque, I have zero tekkie skills, so the word ‘environment’ is for me totally opaque in an IT context. If you mean the operating system, I have the dreaded Windows 10 - probably the worst and most frustrating OS in the world. That Gates man has lost me kbs of data with his damned updates !
You don’t need to be a tekkie (whatever this is) to imagine that your description doesn’t enable anyone to provide a meaningful answer without to much speculations and requiring answers phrasing If then … , else if … else if … then… and so on

Operating system?
Version of LibreOffice?
Type of documents / Content (Size of documents, content of documents, Linking to other documents …)
Hardware (CPU, RAM, since you seem to have some performance problem, this might be important)
Storage devices (local disk, USB drives, using a cloud service)
I noticed that LibreOffice writer will stall if you insert too many images without saving, saving after inserting each image seems to resolve the issue. Surely it would be even better if id did not stall.
Thanks Niels. The LO Writer file that’s giving me grief is a 120,000 word book - quite a lot of kbs therefore. So I am having to do something along the lines you suggest - manually saving, saving, saving after every new paragraph. VERY tedious and creativity-sapping !
