The answer to this question varies slightly by operating system. In general, though: Most of LibreOffice is contained in just one executable and downloading or installing only some components does not save much space on the hard drive.

  • Windows:
You have to download the whole package, but you can choose to install only certain applications. To do this, choose the Install Type "Custom" on the third page of the installer, click "Next" and then select the applications you want.

  • Linux:
Most Linux distributions come with most parts of LibreOffice installed, Ubuntu for example only lacks the database component by default. You can install and uninstall individual components through your package manager. On Ubuntu and Debian, those packages are libreoffice-writer, libreoffice-calc, libreoffice-draw etc.

  • Mac OS:
You need to download the whole package and it is not possible to select which applications to install.

@Astron, even if you choose Custom under Windows, all the files are installed, the only difference is that the icons for the programs you did not install will not show up in the Startup group. However if you start the LibreOffice item all the programs are available.

Just checked (with 3.5) and I stand to my original post. (Note, that for one, some disk space is actually freed and for the other, that all the uninstalled Start Centre items are greyed out and can't be started.)

@Astron, I didn't notice that change. Thank you for the correction! However in terms of disk space it is almost irrelevant. As an example removing all "programs" except for Writer from reduced the install folder from 361Mb to 338Mb (23Mb = 6% reduction!)

It is possible to download specific LibreOffice applications if you're using GNU/Linux and install through repository, although not much bandwidth will be saved. LO needs some core packages to work which take up most of space, while individual programs currently do not exceed 8 MB download size and 21 MB when installed.

No. For the Windows OS it is a unique download. There is no way to download a separate program.

All programs included in the LibreOffice suite are included in the same group of files and in the same installer. In fact, when you switch from one LibreOffice program to another you are in fact just changing the interface but the files loaded are the same: soffice.exe and soffice.bin
