TOC how to remove specific characters from original text

Hi,
I have a very tricky problem and I hope to be clear.
I am preparing a book of conference proceedings, the TOC includes –for each chapter– Title and name of author (into two distinct lines and heading styles). Now, I have the problem that one chapter is written by two authors with different affiliations. Therefore, after each author’s name there is a superscript number (such as footnote) to refer to the corresponding affiliation that appear later in the page. Thus, the first page of the Chapter appears like:

TITLE OF THE CHAPTER

First Author’s Name1 and Second Author’s Name2

Is it possible to make the 1 and 2 not visible in the corresponding text in the TOC?

Any help is welcome.
thank you!

theotrst,

You can turn off protection of the tables of contents, and edit manually.

yes. I suppose this is the easiest way. thanx

Objects which sidetrack from running text (like footnote anchors, math formulas, frames) are not shown in ToC. You could insert that superscript as a math object or a transparent frame. This requires some attention to placement and formatting, but avoids the superscripts turning up (possibly undetected) when ToC is updated.
