Mail Merge Issue Between Versions

I work in many places (home, workplace, co-workers’ place). We use libreoffice for our doc needs. I was used to MS mail merge and was applying the same kind of work in LibreOffice. Turns out, you can but with some getting used to a different approach as MS. But the bottom line is you can.

I was doing forms. I encounter some difficulty when I tried to update a mail merge document on a different version of LibreOffice. I originally created the file on a version 5. I uploaded this file over Google Drive, including the partnered ods file. Downloaded the files to another desktop computer. This time this computer is using a Libreoffice version 6. I was not looking at the tail of version 6 – The merge doesn’t seem to work as it should – didn’t get to describe the issue as I’m pressed for time – I decided to use another computer, it also has a version 6 – this version 6 is I think one below the latest stable as of this writing.

This one seem to work as usual - data is uploaded and displayed as it should. Even navigating between data. The only problem was during ‘saving’ the document → it doesn’t read the total records right and it generates way past the record without stopping. I only have 30 something records and it generated more – I have to force stop the app and see the same data.

I also remember running into another problem like I can’t choose the ods file. Writer just seem to ignore my action to re-add the ods file I’m using.

The work around was - create another mail merge. Now this works - now what a waste of time. (TROUBLESHOOTING without success and doing the mail merge all over again).

This is maybe just me. I was used to working between different computers on different locations. I use LibreOffice for doc works as it is a pro app in my opinion and doesn’t cost a lot. While the ones I worked with was using MS as they are used to using MS and doesn’t bother to learn another. I’m trying to insert LibreOffice into the work culture little by little by introducing features that my co-workers doesn’t know existed in MS - when they need it. Besides, I also don’t know how the MS feature works - if I have to learn this feature, I sure would try it on LibreOffice first before any other similar app.

Is there a way to make the created mail merge document work between versions? Maybe there is but I missed it while troubleshooting.

The solution I got was use the same major version if using Mail Merge.
