Newbie here with some basic questions (dictionaries, AutoCorrect, built-in offline Help)

I’m new to using LibreOffice and while I like what I see so far, I have several big issues with it. I’ve tried the official help website and general googling but couldn’t find any satisfactory answers…

  1. Is there a dictionary that you can use to define words? (In Microsoft Word, you can right-click a word and choose “Look up.” I can’t find a similar function in LibreOffice.)

  2. How do I turn off the Auto-suggestion that suggests words as I type? I found tutorials on how to disable it, but all the tutorials seem to be outdated and now inaccurate, so they don’t help.

  3. How do I install the built-in offline Help? Occasionally I run into a pop-up saying “You may either install it from our website or your system’s repositories, or read an online version,” but I can’t find where the installer is located either on the website or my system.

I’m using LibreOffice v. 6.4.5 on Windows 10.

What version of LibreOffice are you using, and on what operating system? Please edit your question to provide this information - don’t use Add Answer as it is not an answer to your question.

Hi. Your first question is the hardest but lets see:

  1. There isn’t a Look Up word function. If you have a dictionary with a thesaurus installed then you can right-click on a word and see some synonyms. Not exactly a definition but helpful. I would be more inclined to choose my reference source and search in a browser. Once upon a time there was an OOo extension which included such a function. I don’t know if it still works but you can try and see: Writer's Tools | Apache OpenOffice Extensions
  2. Auto completion. In the menu click Tools | AutoCorrect | Autocorrect Options... In the window that opens click on the Word Completion tab, untick the box labelled Enable Word Completion
  3. Help. Go to https://www.libreoffice.org/download/… , in the box that contains the LO version you installed is a suggested help pack to match your language and OS bits 64 or 32. If that isn’t the one you are after then the line below says “Need another language?” Follow that link to select the pack(s) you want to download and install.

Cheers, Al

Awesome, thanks for the help!

Glad I could help. There is more documentation on LO site English documentation | LibreOffice Documentation - Your documentation for LibreOffice . Also I found this book well worth reading for the principles behind the way things should be done in LO, it is a free download Download / Buy |
