Indicating that table continues across next page [solved]

Hello!

The document I am formatting has several long tables that do not fit on a single page. I have been instructed to indicate a continuation on the table on to the next page as follows:

There should be a continuation statement at the top left of the page to indicate that the table is continuing onto this page. The statement should say “Table 7 (cont’d)”

How can I best achieve this? Using the header will obviously create text on all of the pages.

Thanks much.

A workaround would be on the second page to insert a frame, put the words “Table 7 (cont’d)” into it, size frame to suit, and set borders to none. Anchor to Page and align manually.

This is a desperate workaround because the frame is fixed to the page, not to the table; if the table is moved the frame isn’t. Although unsuitable to share as editable document it should be OK printed or exported as pdf.

This issue is going to be the end of me. The formatting checker now tells me this:

The continuation statement should say “Table 13 (cont’d)” The continuation statement should appear outside of the table itself.

Is it possible to do this with a header and have it appear only on the page I need it to appear?

I wanted to answer this question in case anyone else is having trouble with this issue (and myself the next time I have to do this). I did try to insert a frame with the table continuation statement, but as the second part of the table started at the top of the margin, I couldn’t do that because the continuation statement had to be OUTSIDE the table. I solved this by splitting the table, which provided a space for text at the top of the second page, right above where the table started and put the continuation statement there. Worked perfectly!
