change default font in writer without creating new template

I feel like a dufus for asking this but when I change the default font in writer 7.0.0.3 it does not hold. I close a document, open a new document and the font is the old font. i go back into libreoffice>preferences>Libreoffice writer basic fonts western and it has the old font. I cannot see how I am misunderstanding this feature. Can someone please help me. on a mac with version 10.15.6 OS

Thanks.

This setting is saved in your user profile. Check that permissions along the path to the directory allow write access.

You can tell where the user profile is with Tools>Options, LibreOffice>Paths. Look for paths containing libreoffice/4/user.

Thanks. I wonder why I see this ‘tools/options’ so much in people’s answers when that setting is not there - it’s under libreoffice/preferences. Is this a version difference between you and me? or an OS difference? I check permissions of that user dir and I appear to have read/write. So I don’t think that’s the issue. Did I understand you correctly?

Apologies, I didn’t read with my eyes your OS. Tools>Options is for Windows, Linux and other BSD’s. When LO is ported on MacOS, the app is made MacOS-like and the menu item is moved toLibreOffice>Preferences.

You need to modify your Font setting under Default style.

This will change your font for this document. Otherwise, if this is the font you want to use as default for all future documents, you must define a template.

File > Templates > Save as Template... > Save as Default Template

Thanks. I was hoping to not have to do that but it is a fine workaround if I do. Thanks.
