Intuitive page number format in Writer?

I wrote a document of about 80 pages.

  1. adding page numbers from page 1 to 80 in the footer is easy to do (insert page numbers)
  2. I need to add a cover page plus a blank page without page numbers.
  3. I then automatically generated a table of contents, where I would like the page numbers to be (i, ii , iii …)
  4. Start the first unit with page number 1 (but the table of content shows it as 5).

I looked at the manual and tried using different page styles, but somewhere I’m missing it. It should be easy click on the default style and select a new style, but …

Please help.

Thanks for having deleted the duplicate

Every group of page numbered in its own way (no number, Roman numbers, ordinary numbers, …) should be formatted by a separate page style.

You must first create the needed page styles.

According to your description, you can use built-in First Page for you cover (WARNING! First Page automatically switches to Default Style when end of page is reached) and Default Style for the bulk of the discourse.

Create a style for the unnumbered pages and one for the TOC. Give these styles the required properties (header, footer, margins, type of page number).

The key point is to cause a change in the page styles at precise locations in your document. This is done with “special” page breaks. You must use Insert>More Breaks>Manual Break. In the dialog, you can designate the page style to be made active after the break. You can also define the starting page number after the break.

A remark: things are intuitive when they fit in one’s habits, i.e. when they don’t hurt long-standing routines. Even when they are simple and “logical”, they will be qualified “counter-intuitive” because they shake non-debated “certainties”. When starting with a new tool, always learn the tool specifications. You don’t drive screws with a hammer, do you?

Thanks, “The key point is to cause a change in the page styles at precise locations in your document.” I’ll have to look into this area. I thought I was changing the page styles. But got into some sort of loop, change the page style in one place and then change it at a different place in the document and the page number just did not work.

I made changes to the page style regarding the type of numbering to use, but I did not notice the save button. So, the page style in the document kept going back to default mode.

Your remark is very sharp.
