The help tells me this:
"Changing the Color of Text
Click the arrow next to the Font Color icon to activate a toolbar from which you can choose from a range of colors.

I cannot find any Font Color icon anywhere. (Apparently it is supposed to look like a small letter “a”?) Where is it?
Which type of the toolbars are you using? Can you upload a screeshot about your toolbar?
Otherwiswe it is better to use the Styles (the Paragraph Styles and the Character Styles) instead of the direct (manual) formatting method.

To change the color of existing text, you first have to select it and then use the toolbar icon.
