Centering Image in Writer - How to do this without caption moving?

Hello,

I am writing a document and I have an image that when first pasted fills the page horizontally at the bottom of the page, as shown here:

Then I try to resize the image by grabbing the little box at its lower right corner and dragging up and to the left. Here is the result:

This results in the image being smaller, but now there are two problems:

  1. There is no way to set it in the middle of the page horizontally. If I click on the image, the “Align Center” icon is greyed out.
  2. The caption is now on the right of the image instead of below it.

How can I get the image in the center and keep the caption below the image? This is very easy to do in Word, so I am surprised it is so difficult in Writer!

Thanks

  • Change the image anchor from As Character to To Paragraph.
  • Select a different Wrap option.

See LibreOffice Help on Image.

WARNING: Anchor To Character may hide the image. LibreOffice 6.3.6.2 (x86); OS: Windows 6.1.

What you experience depends on the method you used to insert the image and create the caption.

By default, when you Insert>Picture or paste a picture, its anchor mode is To paragraph. The picture then rests in a frame which can be moved around the page. If you have another anchor mode, force it to To paragraph by right clicking on the image and Anchor>To paragraph. Set also wrap mode to none.

With the image selected, Insert>Caption. You now have an outer frame containing the image (an inner frame) and a caption paragraph.

The caption can be centered as usual with style, toolbar button or keyboard shortcut. But this does not work on the image because it is a frame, not text. To center the image within the width of the outer frame (= the width of the caption paragraph), right-click on the image and Position & Size. Set the horizontal position Centered relative to Paragraph area.

These settings can be remembered in a frame style so that you only need to assign the style to newly inserted images and instantly get your preferred formatting.
