Inconsistent bottom spacing?

I have a document with paragraph bottom spacing as:
Above paragraph 0.00"
Below paragraph 0.04"
Line spacing> Proportional > 138%

In the screenshot you can see the bottom of one page the text gets close to the bottom and in the next page there is a big space greater than 0.04" at the bottom (Yes, it is the start of a new paragraph but even if I set spacing to 0.00" there is still the big space)

My issue is on page 52

Please upload an ODF type sample document here.

Or check the widow and orphan lines settings in the applied paragraph styles. (See them on the “Text flow” TAB)

Uploaded ~ my issue is on page 52 ~ Orphan lines is checked

It seems this document was converted from the obsolote, never standardized .doc file format.
Your sample document has a very garbled structure:

There are many unused page styles named Convert1…Convert60.

There are many enforced page breaks with same page styles on the next page… In this cases the LO can not control the text flow automatically.

There are many paragraphs with applied paragraph style named “Firstpage Firstpage” inside the document.

You are using the Heading paragraph styles for the titles and subtitles.

The text sometimes is formatted by the “Default” paragraph style, but sometimes is formatted by the “Text body” paragraph style.

The applied paragraph style is the “Text body” on the 52-53 pages. This style has these properties: Keep with next paragraph: OFF; Orphan control: ON, 2 lines; Widow control: ON, 2 lines. But the Line spacing is applied by Direct formatting method.

Tips:

  • Try to adjust these Text flow related and the Spacing related properties in the APPLIED STYLE,
  • delete the direct formatting properties,
  • and then clear the unused styles,
  • and finally you need re-structure the whole document.

Thank you!

I believe I am going to bite the bullet and just start a new document from scratch as in ODT document. I’m just 52 pages in so I’m hoping it won’t take too long.

This enlarged space is caused by orphan/widow management.

Your Text Body paragraph style is configured for orphan 2 lines and widow 2 lines. This means that Writer will avoid to leave 2 lines or less at the bottom or top of every page by adjusting the page break.

In traditional typography, it is considered better looking to try and keep paragraphs as an atomic group (because a paragraph is supposed to be relative to a single point).

If your goal is to spare paper as much as possible, uncheck the boxes for orphan/widow control. However, in a large document, having a nice looking formatting helps to understand text.
