Problem with the page counter

A certain file has about 63 pages of text. I have lost no text but from one session to the next the page counter in the lower left part of the screen went from showing that I had 63 or so pages to showing that I had just 3 pages. Possibly I hit a wrong button by mistake.

Do you really mean the page counter or the page number? Do you read “Page 3 of 63” or just “Page 3”?

As I scroll down, it goes from Page 1 of 3 to Page 2 of 3 and then to Page 3 of 3, but no further, even though I clearly have over sixty pages.

Also, when it goes to Page 2 of 3, it does not do so when I am physically at page 2.

Rather, it goes from Page 1 of 3 to Page 2 of 3 when I get to more or less the middle of the text (I can tell that it is at the middle because I can see how the small gray rectangle on the right side of the screen goes down as I scroll down).

It goes from Page 2 of 3 to Page 3 of 3 when that gray rectangle gets to about an inch above the bottom of the screen, which is about page 55 of the text.

So the page counter is stuck at 3 and the page number goes no farther than 3.

Also, possibly connected to that problem, when I get out of the file and go to the screen where I choose "Open File, “Create Writer Document,” etc., the width of the display of the first page of the file has shrunk from about two and a half inches (horizontally) to about an inch and a half.

The height of the display is the same as for all other files displayed there.

I looked at some other files and they are fine with respect to the page counter, the page number and the size of the image displayed where I choose “Open file,” etc.
Thanks for your help.

I may have solved the problem. I highlighted, copied, dragged, and pasted the entire text into a new file and it came out to be 64 or 65 pages long, which is what I had before the problem arose.

Independently of that procedure, I noticed that the footnotes in the problematic text were very far from the pages where they should be and that they were now gathered into three groups (each group appearing about a third of the way down when I scrolled down), I reasoned that I must have accidentally changed the length of the page or the number of lines per page to some very high figure and that mistake was causing the page counter to show only three pages and the footnotes to be grouped into three groups.

Thanks. Everything is now fine.

In the original file, you were viewing the document in Web view, which makes for very long pages, as you have noticed. You should use Normal or Page view.
