Each time I try to start the wizard to generate a function (eg concatenate), Libre Calc stops working.

Check your procedure running in LibreOffice Safe Mode (Help -> Restart in Safe Mode). If the problem is gone while in Safe Mode, most probably your user profile is corrupt and you need to reset to factory settings using

  • Start LibreOffice
  • Start in Safe Mode using Help -> Restart in Safe Mode and confirm the restart using button: Restart
  • Archive your profile expanding Advanced (click on the word Advanced right above Help button) and click Archive User Profile button
  • Select option Reset to factory settings
  • Activate [x] Reset entire user profile
  • Click button Apply Changes and Restart

(Perform only if problem does not occur in Safe Mode)

Boom! Fixed thanks Opaque. (But I didn't read your last comment until after I'd stepped through your instructions!)

For the records (according to OPs comment):

Reset the user profile using the following procedure:

  • Start LibreOffice
  • Start in Safe Mode using Help -> Restart in Safe Mode and confirm the restart using button: Restart
  • Archive your profile expanding Advanced (click on the word Advanced right above Help button) and click Archive User Profile button
  • Select option Reset to factory settings
  • Activate [x] Reset entire user profile
  • Click button Apply Changes and Restart
