Problem with styles on writer 703. Apllying style to selected word changes whole document

When I apply a style for eg Heading 1 whole text changes to this style. I mark just one word. What to do? I use writer 703

You probably have only a single paragraph in your document.

Although the appearance of a paragraph break (Enter) looks visually the same as a line break (Shift+Enter), the functions of these formatting directives are not at all the same.

Enable View>Formatting Marks to see clues on screen.

A paragraph break signals Writer the end of a paragraph. A paragraph is the base unit on which formatting rules, like paragraph styles will be applied. Paragraphs are independent of each other and can receive different formatting throug styles.

A line break is just a “character” like all letters. It does not create a logical break in the document: it does not create a new paragraph. Characters before and after a line break are part of the same paragraph. A line break just instructs Writer to some assembling a line and to start a new one inside the same paragraph. Lines before and after (up to the closest paragraph marks in both directions) have the same formatting (the same paragraph style).

Therefore, if you just put line breaks in your text, applying a paragraph style will affect the whole document.

Your second question is about highlighting a word. You select it and then want to apply a style.

As mentioned above, if you apply a paragraph style to the selected word, per definition, you’ll change the paragraph formatting. To change the formatting of only a part of a paragraph, you must apply a character style. A character style overrides paragraph style for the characters on which it is applied.

Character styles are not selected through the toolbar(s). They are available in the style sidepane (F11 if not already visible). Then click on the second icon in the style toolbar. This icon usually shows an A. Double-click on a style name to apply it.

Once formatting marks are enabled you can see:

  • Paragraph = ¶ (U+00b6)
  • Line break = ↵ (U+21b5)
